Hemoglobin is the iron-containing oxygen-carrying protein in the
red blood cells in mammals. It carries oxygen from lungs to the cells, where the oxygen is transferred to another heme containing protein, myoglobin. It is tetrameric with four globular protein subunits, each consisting of an heme group. The heme group consists of an iron where oxygen can bind.
