How has the gene been characterized at the molecular level so far?
 
      The human MLH1 gene has been characterized at the molecular level by it’s sequence.  The sequence of bases in a gene determines which amino acids will make up the protein the gene encodes.  Additionally, the sequence of bases determines the order of those amino acids.  In turn, the specific order of amino acids determines the physical shape of the protein.  The shape of the protein is what determines it’s function in the cell.  Thus, the sequence of bases dictates the structure and function of a specific protein.  Currently, the easiest way to obtain sequences, which are often very long, is to access one of the many databases on the web which store sequence information.  The following sites are the GenBank submissions of the sequence of the gene as sequenced by the two groups of researchers to simultaneously and independently determine the sequence of the gene.
