What are referred to in
these lines as the Six Classics are known to scholars today as the Five
Classics, and the Rites
of the Zhou Dynasty is not among them. Apparently, there
was a sixth, perhaps relating to music, which was lost by the time of
the writiing of the Sanzijing. To preserve the "six" the author
promoted the Rites
of the Zhou Dynasty to replace it. more
